The Reputable Tax Preparer

ARTICLE | MAY 11, 2022

Recent law changes (including those resulting from COVID-19) continue to add to an uncertain and complex tax world. With the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) contending with significant backlogs, taxpayers are often left struggling to find the help they need. All the while, tax audit rates continue to increase especially as taxpayer income grows. Where can one turn to help navigate these complexities, and is there a way to ensure both that tax requirements are met and full benefits are received?

The IRS has released a list of tips to keep in mind when selecting a tax return preparer (read the entire article here). All the items listed are valuable suggestions for taxpayers to consider. Many, however, focus on issues that happen late in the filing process (e.g. asking to e-file, reviewing before signing, never signing a blank return) when the taxpayer has already been working with a preparer and has invested much time and energy. How, then, do taxpayers find a reputable tax preparer they can trust?

One clear suggestion is to focus on the search itself, investing time in understanding the preparer’s history and qualifications.

Check the Preparer’s Qualifications

The IRS provides useful information on understanding and differentiating between tax return preparer credentials and qualifications. As mentioned in the article, they also maintain a Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers where one can research tax return preparers in one’s area and determine their credentials or qualifications.

Review the Preparer’s History

When it comes to history, the importance of continuity, longevity, and a proven track record cannot be overstated. In addition to information available from company websites and the Better Business Bureau, the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy provides a few valuable resources where anyone can look up registered CPA firms and individual licensees. CPA Verify also provides an online search tool that allows anyone to verify credentials of certified public accountants (CPAs) across the United States.
